Touch Installation

Returning to sculpture in the early 2000's, my work includes large-scale installations, works in miniature, and works in both 2 and 3 dimensions. 

 

Using mostly found objects and discarded/pre-used materials, I explore the public and domestic spheres, referencing politics, personal and historical myths, and identity.

 

This work was made in the months just before the pandemic struck, but still feels very relevant in the current situation. When I began the work, I wanted to explore how differently individuals experience and process physical and emotional sensation and information. A lot of the pieces focus on touch, and how our bodies respond and interpret different forms of touch.  In the last 18 months, Covid has changed how many people feel about touch - it can cause fear and disgust, longing and sadness - it is something now to be resisted and considered. I am fascinated to see how recent events have changed the context and possibly the interpretation of the work. 

 

The show is an installation, a map of linked pieces, featuring abstracted images of specific nerve endings found in the human body, and also including visual references to the materials and tools used in the work.
